Developing a Vision Statement for CR
At the suggestion of the education master plan consultant team from the California Collegiate Brain Trust (CCBT), and at the request of the Education Master Plan Committee, an ad-hoc subcommittee of the Coordinated Planning Council was formed to assist the college to develop a vision statement. Led by EOPS Assistant Director Sheila Hall and including Mike Wells, Steve Stratton, and Debbie Williams, this subcommittee met several times. A draft vision statement was presented to the Education Master Plan Committee on October 22nd, and feedback was generated.
The Coordinated Planning Council would like to engage the district as a whole in the development of the vision for the college. Please see the initial draft vision statement, the description of what a vision statement is, and some examples provided by the CCBT, below. Your charge over the coming weeks is to review and provide feedback on CR’s vision statement so that the final product truly reflects our collective vision for the future of the institution.
Your feedback may be incorporated into a refined vision statement for the district that will be vetted by the district through the collegial consultative process. Thank you in advance for your participation in this important project.

Draft Vision Statement:
The Redwoods Community College District is a leading contributor for intellectual and economic growth in the North Coast Region. We enhance our communities by creating educationally rewarding environments that promote the success of every student through effective and innovative programs.
Vision Statement Definitions:
- A present-tense statement that communicates where an organization believes it will be within a stated time period. See http://inside.redwoods.edu/StrategicPlanning/defenitionofterms.asp for more definitions.
- A vision is the “big picture”, broad-based overview of what our institution can and should be in the future. It should summarize the aspirations of the college and raise expectations for the future.
- A vision is NOT a mission, values, or philosophy statement. Although the vision should guide these others, it is not intended to replicate what is already stated in an institution’s mission, values, or philosophy.
Vision Statement Examples:
College of the Canyons:
College of the Canyons is dedicated to being a leading two-year college, recognized locally, regionally, statewide and nationally for technical advancement, institutional effectiveness, student support, model academic and professional programs, excellence in teaching and learning, fostering a broad range of community partnerships, maximizing student access and for the sense of community that we provide to our students and staff.
Mendocino College:
The vision of Mendocino College is to be the major contribution to the vitality of our communities by inspiring student learning and motivating personal development. We strive to deliver excellent, innovative educational support programs that are accessible to all and focus on student success.
Palomar College:
Learning for Success
Sierra College:
We will challenge ourselves and our community to become fulfilled citizens in a global environment contributing to and engaging in the thoughtful application of knowledge guided by respect for others and the world in which we live.
Feedback Guidelines:
The subcommittee feels that we have a good start; however we need to better address the following concerns:
- Access (in a global sense) to underrepresented populations utilizing technology and new distance education learning pedagogies
- The institution’s need for workforce or vocational preparation and training
- Underprepared students
- Please feel free to provide specific feedback regarding wording as well as general feedback on CR's vision statement.
Anticipated Timeline:
Please provide any comments on CR's vision statement by Friday, December 5. The CPC subcommittee will make revisions to the proposed vision statement based on this feedback and will repost it for viewing. The Coordinated Planning Council hopes to provide a forum for group discussion of CR's developing vision statement as a flex activity in January.
